UK Reseller Web Hosting

Welcome to my personal guide to UK reseller web hosting - helping you to find the best reseller hosting companies based in the United Kingdom.

The 'Featured Hosts' that you see below are companies where I currently operate a reseller account. They will not be featured here unless I have found them to be of a very high quality - no host can persuade me to advertise their company in this section of the website just by offering payment - they don't get listed here unless I've tested them myself and can recommend them personally!

Please bear in mind the important difference between this site and the usual 'hosting review' sites out there - they will list any old host - all they care about is how much the host is paying them. Many of the 'reviews' are also fake, some unscrupulous hosts will actually offer people free hosting in return for writing positive reviews.

This is why you won't see a large number of hosts listed here - but any UK web hosting reseller that you do see featured here has been tested by me and you can rest assured that I won't be recommending them to you unless I've found them to be solid, professional companies. That's a promise!

United Hosting

My Personal United Hosting Review

I've been with UnitedHosting since April 2004 and the service has been outstanding - I started out with a custom plan for up to 15 domains (not shown below, but they will design a custom solution for anyone that requests it). Set up was lightening fast - and this has also been the case on the very rare occasions that I've had to contact the support department - an email response within minutes every time.

United Hosting use the Ensim control panel, which I find a breeze to use - although you may be used to the more familiar cPanel. Ensim was chosen by United Hosting because it offers higher levels of security, and this appears to have been a wise decision - I have had bad experiences with other hosts using cPanel, where the server has been hacked into several times - but security at United Hosting has been 100%.

Server uptime has been extremely good - on average about 2 blips a year where the server has been down for a few minutes - I haven't tried to work out the precise figures, but I'm confident it's in the region of 99.99% uptime - which is as good as any host can promise you (if anyone promises you 100% uptime, don't believe them - it's pretty near impossible to come close to that unless you shell out big bucks to companies like Rackspace).

Other UK Reseller Hosts

The hosts listed below have not been tested by me (this is why you will not see a 'personal' review, as with the featured hosts above) - but I include details of them here to assist you in making an informed decision and for the purpose of completeness.

These reseller hosts are companies that I have thoroughly researched - I will not list details of any hosts that are not well established, professional businesses, with a large number of positive reviews from satisfied customers - you can be certain that NO host will be listed here unless I would seriously consider using them myself.

Altaire Hosting Review

Altaire have been in business since 1997, their clients include some of the world's largest ecommerce websites. Their reseller servers are located in the same data centre, and taken care of by the same engineers, who look after these clients demanding the highest standard of mission critical ecommerce hosting. Their network is the largest IP network in the world - they are not just another datacentre connected remotely to a backbone (like most other hosts) - they are located IN a private backbone building with direct connectivity (visible) to core backbone routers.

Another impressive feature that makes Altaire stand out is that they do not offer end user hosting, so as not to compete directly with their own resellers for their business. No other major UK reseller hosting company has taken this step. They also provide complete branding for your hosting business at no extra charge - there is TOTAL privacy for you, so that your clients will NEVER see the Altaire name.

They average only 300 sites per server, compared to around 2000-5000 sites per server with lesser resellers - and they have a dedicated reseller support team, focused on providing an unmatched level of personal service - all in all, a very impressive looking company that I may well try out myself in the future!

Prices: Reseller accounts from £50 per month (free trial available).

VidaHost Review

Vidahost was established in 2002 and is located in the premium Redbus Meridian Gate datacentre in the London Docklands. Their UK servers are Dual processor, dual-core Intel Woodcrests with 2 - 4Gb RAM and multiple hard disks configured in hardware RAID1 - very powerful servers - and to increase performance and reliability still further, they have a policy of not overcrowding them.

This appears to be backed up by the many positive reviews I've been reading about Vidahost - regarding both their reliability and level of customer support - to check out the uptime for their standard servers, please click here (uptime reported at webhostingstuff.com) - at the time of writing this they are easily achieving 99.99%

In addition to their standard reseller accounts, they also offer 'Business+' reseller accounts with a 100% uptime guarantee - they never place more than 10 Business+ accounts on any one server. I'm always wary about any claims for 100% uptime, but they have clearly demonstrated that they can achieve 99.99% uptime on their standard servers - so I think there is a fair chance that they could make it, or at least come very, very close.

Frankly, even if they only achieved 99.999%, their Business+ account would still be a cracking good deal - extreme, mission critical reliability like that is VERY expensive to buy at places like Rackspace - a lot more than Vidahost are charging for it.

Prices: Standard reseller accounts from £14.99 per month, Business+ reseller accounts from £49.00 per month.

Reseller Hosting Guide

There are essentially two uses for a reseller web hosting account. You can use it to 'resell' hosting services to consumers (ie set yourself up as a hosting company) - or you can simply use it to host multiple domains of your own.

As a reseller, you are using the servers and infrastructure of a larger company and marketing this to end users completely anonymously - people who sign up with your hosting plans will be unaware that you do not actually own the servers or maintain them yourself. This is a great way for a small hosting company to set up in business - you don't have the huge expense and hassle of operating a data centre - all you have to do is market your hosting plans and provide customer support.

If, like me, you just use a reseller account to host multiple domains of your own, you will find it far cheaper and more convenient than buying a separate hosting account for each domain. Once you have several domains hosted, the cost works out at around 50 pence per domain per month ($1 per domain per month). These figures are based on a 'quality' web host located in the UK - you can get reseller hosting much cheaper than this, but you won't find me recommending companies like that on this website, because they are total junk. Bargain basement web hosting is a false economy and nothing but stress and hassle!
